Phenomena

Description

The diversity of the phenomena of nature is so great, and the treasures hidden in the heavens so rich, precisely in order that the human mind shall never be lacking in fresh nourishment.
Johannes Kepler

Truth be told, I've been holding off on uploading this for a while because I wasn't sure that I'd be able to find the right words to explain, and quite frankly I'm still trying to find the right words to explain.
However, sometimes the beauty of art is being able to express something that one cannot put into words, and the breathtaking intricacy of the mechanics of living organisms (DNA replication, cellular functions, carefully designed organs, etc.) honestly has me at a loss for words.

Media: oil bar, acrylic paint, oil paint, ink, wire

This was completed in two parts:
1) The first part was collaborative; everyone in class drew whatever they wanted on everyone elses' boards.
2) The second part was individual; we took our boards home and finished them however we saw fit.

The title and quote are truly befitting of this artwork. I understand why it’d be difficult to explain this artwork with mere words. However, the indescribable nature of this piece serves as part of its beauty—there is nothing more captivating than an artwork that can be understood but not defined. I can give my interpretation of this piece but I’m not going to attempt to describe what I see because I’m also speechless. However, I will give credit where credit is due because this artwork is bloody fantastic!

I don’t know where to start. Hell, there is no defined ‘starting point’ for my eyes are drawn to every centimeter of this canvas. Your artwork is brilliant! This piece has a beautiful flow throughout it. You’ve managed to create an intricate composition without creating clutter; everything has its place and every colour has a role, as it is in nature. I hope that you received a high score for this artwork because it is bloody brilliant. Although my opinion counts for naught, I believe that ‘Phenomena’ belongs in an art gallery.

I especially love the inky splatters that firework off of the eye and make an appearance throughout the artwork. Those inky branches remind me of neurons. Similarity, I like the use of the zipper—it’s cool to see classic imagery within new paintings.

The colours demand attention as shaping the artwork, and they work together harmoniously. I’m jealous of your knowledge of colour palettes. I also love the use of wire; it serves as a perfect ‘structure’ for the eye. God, there many more aspects to comment on and yet I find myself struggling for works. Just know that I love this artwork! I also love the concept behind this project. The collaborative process -once defined by your hand- serves as a wonderful undertone to the power of this artwork.
